Columbia West provided special inspection and testing services for the Temco Kalama Upland Works Modernization Project located at the Port of Kalama. Columbia West led and managed all structural special inspections services by working closely with the management team, contractors and local jurisdictional agencies. Improvements to the facility include extensive slip-form concrete and steel construction along with major underground improvements. Columbia West assisted with construction management activities by offering our extensive expertise derived from our highly qualified staff of engineers, inspectors and technicians.

Columbia West provided the initial geotechnical site investigation including subsurface exploration, in situ field strength testing, laboratory analysis, design, and construction recommendations. In addition to providing geotechnical support and assistance during the design and planning phase, Columbia West is currently performing construction oversight and inspection services during the mass grading ground improvements phase as well as specialized inspection services for the school building including, concrete, rebar, masonry, welding, steel, high-strength bolting inspection and more. Columbia West’s full-service approach provides a continuity of services from initial design to building occupancy.

Columbia West provided geotechnical engineering design, analysis, and support for construction of MSE retaining structures, shoring towers, soldier pile walls, and bearing capacity. Specialized laboratory testing was conducted to determine soil shear strength parameters for use in structural and geotechnical design. Shoring towers were designed to support the weight of the large bridge girders during construction. Columbia West also provided concrete testing support for early strength concrete and special inspection services.

Columbia West has provided geotechnical construction monitoring and special inspection services for several BNSF railroad projects located throughout the Pacific Northwest. Projects include rail mainline, siding, and yard improvements. Services include nuclear moisture density gauge testing, reinforced concrete inspection, shotcrete inspection, retaining wall backfill testing, and ballast and base aggregate laboratory testing for specific gravity, sand equivalent, fractured face content, maximum dry density, and hardness.

Columbia West performs quality control testing of Pre-mixed Polymer Concrete (PPC) on many ODOT projects throughout Oregon. Quality control testing is performed in the laboratory to verify compliance to specifications on the constituents of the PPC such as sieve analysis and specific gravity of the aggregate, and modulus of elasticity of field fabricated samples of the PPC. Field quality control includes measurement of the substrate macrotexture depth, unit weight determination for each batch of PPC and testing the bond strength between the PPC and the substrate.

Columbia West performed initial and supplemental geotechnical site investigations to support replacement of the existing Mountain View High School located in Vancouver, Washington. The investigation included subsurface exploration utilizing sonic drilling methods, an excavator, and limited-access hand auger equipment. In situ testing for soil strength and seismic response properties included standard penetration testing (SPT), down-hole seismic soundings, and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW). Engineering analysis of subsurface exploration data and laboratory test results was used to provide geotechnical recommendations for seismic site response, pavement design, and shallow foundation support.
Columbia West also provided infiltration test results and subsurface disposal recommendations to facilitate stormwater management design by the civil site plan engineer. During the project construction phase, Columbia West provided geotechnical construction monitoring and special inspection services. Construction monitoring services included nuclear moisture-density testing of embankment fill, utility trench backfill, base aggregate, and asphaltic concrete. Geotechnical oversight also included bearing probe analysis of foundation subgrade soils and infiltration verification testing of stormwater facilities. Special inspection services included inspection and testing of reinforced concrete, masonry, proprietary anchors, and structural steel in accordance with International Building Code requirements. Columbia West also performed floor flatness testing for slabs-on-grade in accordance with ASTM E1155. Successful involvement with the project from initial engineering design through construction and final occupancy demonstrate Columbia West’s commitment to providing cost-effective, quality professional services and innovative resourceful engineering solutions.
